Two exhibitions at the College of Fine Arts UNSW showcase recent works of students from the Ceramic Design Studio.
‘Spin the Table’ presents a collection of contemporary ceramics for the table examining the influence of objects in everyday life through the lens of propaganda. Inspired by the role of the Agitprop ceramics in the Bolshevik revolution, the exhibition looks beyond orthodox functionality at the interaction of form and meaning in consumer ‘stuff’, exploring relationships between ethics, design, manufacturing and markets through the graphic surfaces and ceramic form.
‘Syntropy’ showcases selected design works produced by COFA, UNSW and UNIMAS students in 2012 during a collaborative cross-disciplinary design project held at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, the Contemporary Songket Weaving Centre, Kuching Ceramic Incubator, and the Indigenous ceramic craft centre, Batang Air. Guided by the expertise of traditional artisans in Sarawak these design products for contemporary interiors are aimed at promoting the sustainable development of traditional arts and crafts in Malaysia.
